Taking In
Rodney Nelson
if you dropped a bandanna on the trail
you would turn around in October heat
and find it
however remote the spot
would return alone through basswood and pine
you and another had already seen
and get it
an item that you had missed
in a remote spot you and another
had already come through but maybe you
unalone
had missed like the remaining
yellow at the crown of a tree and would
begin to take in only now that you
were alone
even if the quiet there
had not taken you in you would want to
turn and retrace what you and another
of intent
had not really traced even
if the trail did not go only waited
and the quiet of the spot wanted you
to stay there
because the other would not
be waiting and you were ready for the
next pond and needed to catch up as if
no one had
dropped anything on the trail
